Vaccinate your dog as soon as possible
I advise you to vaccinate your dog quite early because, from the age of 2 months, the puppy is no longer protected by maternal antibodies.
Although he receives a first injection from the breeder, then one to two more injections are needed, and this one month apart.
These vaccinations are essential to:
- Protect the young puppy, more susceptible to viral diseases
- Protect the adult dog, which with age, sees diminish its immune defenses
For the protection of your companion, an annual reminder will be necessary. (Do not forget the dates of recall because, in case of forgetfulness, if your animal comes into contact with a sick dog, it will be able to contract the disease in turn).
I am here to inform you and guide you, a reminder will be sent to you when we start the vaccinations cycle.
For all the pathologies that we will discuss below, a vaccination exists. It can protect your friend.
MAIN CANINE INFECTIOUS DISEASES
Distemper
It was discovered and studied by Dr. Carré.
This disease very contagious especially for young dogs or debilitated animals.
It can cause the death of the animal.
The disease usually starts with fever, then a runny nose and eye.
The lungs (pneumonia) and intestines (gastroenteritis) are then affected and, finally, the nervous system.
Canine parvorirosis
It is a virosis (disease caused by a virus) widespread in canine communities.
It causes hemorrhagic gastroenteritis that can be fatal.
Contagious hepatitis
A bit similar to human viral hepatitis, with more eye flows.
The animal can remain carrier and excretor of the virus.
Rabies
Rabies is a zoonosis (transmissible infection) that can be transmitted to humans.
It is transmitted by saliva.
In Europe rabies is found mainly in wild animals (foxes and bats for example). It kills 50,000 people annually in the world.
Since 2001, Belgium has been free from rabies.
→ Important: If you are traveling abroad with your dog or cat, he must be vaccinated!
Leptospirosis
Acute to subacute disease characterized by fever, gastrointestinal disturbances, nephritis, and sometimes jaundice caused by hepatitis.
Disease transmitted by the contaminated urine of a rat or a dog.
Kennel cough
It is characterized by a strong, dry cough that can spread to the bronchi and lungs.
Occurs often after a stay in a kennel.
Canine herpesvirus
Very common in dog breeding, mainly causes mortality in newborn puppies.
Piroplasmosis
Disease transmitted by ticks, parasite causing destruction of red blood cells.
Leishmaniasis
Leishmaniasis is a chronic disease caused by a microscopic parasite called Leishmania infantum.
This parasite is transmitted by the bite of an insect, the sandfly, which resembles a very small mosquito and is active from May to September in the Mediterranean Basin.
It is a slow-growing disease that can sometimes be very serious in dogs.
